The Road

Yes, it’s a faithful adaptation of the book, for better or for worse. A man (Viggo Mortensen) leads his son on a probably pointless journey south through a post-apocalyptic landscape where humans are the only things still living – and they’ve started living off each other. Not a knockabout comedy, then. Cormac McCarthy’s novel bombards the reader with imagery of a relentlessly grey and dying world where hope and humanity are ground out of the few remaining survivors. By the end, you’ve lived in that world; you understand what food-web destruction would feel like. While it works in the book, the film is episodic and it’s harder to engage with the characters. But for the sake of the message, you should bloody well try. 8/10
