Fantastic Mr Fox

Mr Fox generally has no trouble outwitting nasty farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean to snaffle their chickens, ducks and turkeys. But the farmers finally decide to launch a concerted effort to dig him out, threatening both his family and every other burrowing creature in the neighbourhood. It takes a while to warm to the animation style and the very American approach to Roald Dahl’s story. Also, the writers, Wes Anderson (The Darjeeling Limited) and Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) take plenty of liberties with the story, (PG-rated) dialogue and characters, but they share Dahl’s sense of the absurd and, like the hero, they ultimately get away with it. 8/10
