Legend of the Guardians

Stunning animation, wasted on a dull story. Soren is a young owl who can barely fly when he’s kidnapped, along with his unpleasant older brother Kludd, by the baddie owls. The brave (but pretty bland) Soren escapes and is directed to find the goodie owls, the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, who he thought existed only in legend. Cue battle.

It’s Star Wars with owls but without the charm and humour; it’s generic in plot, emotionally unengaging and has miscast voices. The design decision to have photo-realistic owls doing anthropomorphic things such as forging metal armour and writing books is also odd. But it will have some appeal to young children and the animation is peerless. 5/10
