(French title: L’arnacoeur)
Alex (Romain Duris) is a professional breaker-upper of bad relationships. Concerned friends and relatives pay him to divert the woman’s affections to himself, thus stopping her from making a huge marital mistake.
Alex has a code: the woman genuinely has to be unhappy, even if she doesn’t realise it yet. Unfortunately he also has huge gambling debts, and thus has to ditch the code when handed the case of Juliette (Vanessa Paradis) and her English fiance Jonathan (Andrew Lincoln), who seem to be genuinely in love. Jonathan is rich, honest, good-looking and philanthropic… but his prospective father-in-law thinks she can do better.
This is a rom-com and thus fairly predictable. Duris and Paradis do nothing for me, and not only because he has too many teeth and she appears to be missing one. With her default pout and cold personality, it’s also hard to see Juliette’s appeal. Priceless (Hors de Prix) with Audrey Tautou, which has a similar setting, is much a more engaging film, but Heartbreaker does offer a few laughs. 7/10
