The Skin I Live In

Original title: La piel que habito

Robert (Antonio Banderas), a brilliant plastic surgeon, keeps the beautiful Vera (Elena Anaya) prisoner in his house, where she’s forced to wear a body suit in an unflattering flesh tone. Robert is developing a tough, fire-resistant synthetic skin. His wife died several years earlier, a fact that obsesses Robert.

This entertaining mystery – it never quite gets into thriller territory – employs a shifting timeline to trickle out the facts and connections. It’s Pedro Almodóvar, so expect melodrama, soap-opera plot twists, black humour and a whole chocolate box of sexual transgression. It doesn’t really hang together that well, but it’s never dull. 8/10

Released December 26, 2011.
