The Women on the 6th Floor

Original title: Les Femmes du 6e Etage

Banker Jean-Louis (Fabrice Luchini) lives a laced-up life in 1962 Paris with his superficial wife. Their little brats are at boarding school, so he has few worries beyond getting his breakfast egg boiled to perfection.

For this, he’ll need a new maid, as the family battleaxe has resigned in a huff. Luckily the sixth floor of his apartment building is awash with Spanish maids thanks to the Civil War. It’s reserved young newcomer Maria (Natalia Verbeke) who passes Jean-Louis’ egg test, while also winning their pay negotiation. The bewildered Jean-Louis is soon sucked into the 6th-floor social life, learning to loosen up and love a little.

The plot gets a bit woolly and it lacks a bad guy, but this is a genuinely funny feel-good movie of the type that Hollywood normally cocks up completely. 8/10

Released December 15, 2011.
