Young Adult

Mavis (Charlize Theron) is a newly divorced and routinely hungover writer-for-hire on a decreasingly popular teen fiction series. She decides salvation lies in returning to her small, dull Minnesota hometown to recapture the heart of her thoroughly decent high school ex, even though he loves his wife and they’ve just had a baby.

The hero/ine-in-hometown-Hicksville plot is not exactly undiscovered country for filmmakers and this doesn’t subvert the genre like, say, Grosse Point Blank, despite the transgressive inclinations and droll dialogue of writer Diablo Cody (Juno). The characters are a bit thin and it doesn’t seem to know what it wants to say: is it better to head to the city and be unhappy, or should you just be unhappy in Hicksville and save yourself the effort? A missed opportunity. 6/10

Released January 19, 2012.
