Ralph (Eric Bana), an NYPD cop with a ‘radar’ for bad shit going down, gets drawn into a series of seemingly disconnected events: an ex-Marine beating up his wife; a woman throwing her baby into the zoo’s lion compound; a family hearing strange noises in their cellar.
In joining the dots, his path crosses that of Mendoza, a Jesuit priest and demonologist. Ooh-er.
“Inspired by actual accounts” is not the same as “based on real events”. None of this stuff actually happened. So, if the filmmakers were giving themselves a free hand, they could have written something better structured and creepier than this. It has its moments, but mainly relies on dialogue-drowning subwoofer noisescapes for dramatic effect. It did, however, exceed the very low expectations I had for it. 5/10
