Guardians of the Galaxy

He got quite a shock when he looked in his rear-view mirror.

Peter Quill is carrying nothing but a Sony Walkman when he’s snatched from Earth in the 1980s. On the downside, his mother has just died. On the upside, he’ll miss the 1980s.

Twenty-eight years later, Quill is a fortune hunter commissioned to retrieve a mysterious orb from an abandoned planet. Other forces are hot on his heels. How everyone suddenly knows the orb’s location is unexplained, as is where Quill finds AA batteries for his Walkman. It’s still working. Strains credibility, that.

A fracas ensues on the planet Xandar, and Quill gets locked up in Xandarian jail with green chick Gamora and bounty hunters Rocket, a racoon, and Groot, a tree. They all escape and reluctantly join forces to keep the orb out of the hands of Ronan, an evil former Boyzone member.

It’s all very Star Wars and the characters aren’t quite as likeable as they’re supposed to be, but there are a few laughs and original visuals. 7/10

Released August 7, 2014.
