Alexander’s upcoming 12th birthday party looks like it’s going to be a fizzer: the most popular boy in school is having his party the same day. Alexander just seems to be the unlucky one in his blissfully happy family, and he wishes the tables would turn for once.
Then they do. Among other events, his brother gets a zit, his sister gets a cold, his mum screws up at work, and one film reviewer is struck down by third-degree ennui.
Inspired by (the title of) a 1972 children’s book, this even feels like a 1970s Disney flick. In an era where most family films work on more than one level, this one doesn’t. OK, it’s harmless enough as mildly amusing white-bread entertainment for pre-teens, but adults shouldn’t expect too much. 5/10
